Mercedes 1972 280CE

Mercedes 280CE - Sold Post Auction $30,000
Rarely is there such an obvious car with positive valuation prospects as the hardtop pillarless coupes from the w114 Mercedes series (1968-1976)

Only 67,048 coupes were manufactured from 1969 to 1976 (vs. 1,852,008 saloons). Of these 24,669 were the 280C and 280CE (top of the range), and 42,379 were the lesser 250C and 250CE

Consider this; The Mercedes “Pagoda” is now a collectible beyond most people's reach with a base price now well over $200,000 for a clean original car and there were 48,000 of these manufactured whereas only 24,668 280CE coupes were built - much less in RHD.

Despite that relative rarity, and arguably much more sensible in the Australian climate, the pillarless coupe have been historically priced around $20,000 until recently and are only now starting to gain in value with one recent sale at $40,000 (in Recent Sales) and another higher again in Melbourne

Internationally the coupes are now gaining in price as seen in this recent Bring A Trailer sale at $48,000 USD

So to be clear, we at TheCollectorGarage see the w114 coupe as a strikingly beautiful car, perfectly usable and still trading at an approachable price point, for now. We see these as Top10 most likely Make and Model to do well in the future.

These drive brilliantly and are equally at home even today, some 50 years after production, as a regular driver or weekend special.

This Example

This is an especially clean Australian delivered YorkStar original example owned by a gentleman in Victoria for over 20 years, serviced regularly by PeterStar Motors and now in Sydney, benefiting from a recent comprehensive service from Mercedes master specialist Karlo Kittl Motors

The car is now well-sorted and a rare opportunity, especially in the stunning colour combination to provide a great driver standard car as is, but one that could easily be set aside for future appreciation

Other issues of note

  1. Rust - this example presents beautifully having benefited from a respray in factory original blue and only minimal spots (photographed)
  2. Service records -recent records with renowned Mercedes specialist Kittl Motors
  3. Interior presents very well with original MBTex seats and carpet
  4. Miles – 92,022 on the current clock
